Sometimes I run across Kazuya Minekura’s art, and I am swept away with this gust of utter fondness for this flawed, wonderful series.   For better or for worse, Saiyuki is pretty much the epitome of a character-driven series— the supposed main plot of getting to the west to defeat the youkai plague is very quickly subsumed by exploring the pasts of Sanzo, Goiyo, Goku, and Hakkai, and it’s all the better for it.  I love Minekura’s scratchy, distinctive art style and the fact that though Saiyuki essentially falls within that four-hot-dudes genre (with the hilariously nonsensical fanservicey artbook pictures to match), it also does some genuinely thoughtful things with its characters.  I AM OVERCOME WITH FEELINGS.
